Canadian screen icon to attend event
The Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, Sunrise Health Region, and the Yorkton Short Film and
Video Festival are teaming up to present the Saskatchewan premiere of a feature film production
May 23rd in Yorkton. Released by Capri Films, Away From Her marks the directorial debut of
Canadian actor Sarah Polley. Produced by Atom Egoyan and Doug Mankoff, the film is a heartfelt
look at Alzeheimer’s disease and how it can affect relationships. The film stars a stellar cast
including Julie Christie, Olympia Dukakis, and Canadian screen legend Gordon Pinsent. Pinsent
is scheduled to attend the premiere event in Yorkton.
“We couldn’t be happier to have Mr. Pinsent on hand for this important event that brings
attention to such a progressive, degenerative disease affecting families throughout our
communities,” says Louise Belanger, Community Health Educator, for Sunrise. “Sunrise would
like to thank the Yorkton Film Festival for allowing us the opportunity to team-up with them for
such a worthy cause.”
The film premiere runs May 23rd, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tower Theatre in Yorkton. At the
conclusion of the film, a question and answer session with Gordon Pinsent is scheduled, followed
by a wine and cheese reception. Tickets for the event are available from the Yorkton Film
Festival, and the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan for $ 25. After expenses, all proceeds from
the event go to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan for Alzheimer-related programs
throughout the Health Region.
“This event acts as a nice prelude to the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Yorkton Short Film
and Video Festival,” says Festival Executive Director, Fay Kowal. “The Festival has developed a
tradition of recognizing excellent films and providing great learning opportunities. We welcome
the chance to co-host such an important premiere.”
The Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival is the longest running film festival in North America.

About Gordon Pinsent
A forty-year veteran of theatre, film, television and radio,actor/playwright/author/director Gordon Pinsent is well known to audiences across Canada and the United States. From his many starring roles in a wide variety of television programs and feature films, we remember the recognizable characters Gordon Pinsent has created in popular Canadian culture: the title role of Quentin Durgens MP, the stuffed-shirt Member of Parliament: Will Cole in “The Rowdyman”, a sort of Tom Jones let loose in Newfoundland; John in“John and the Missus”; Edgar Sturgess, the scarlet-coated militiaman in the TV series, “AGift to Last”, written by Pinsent; Swiftwater, the Card shark in “Klondike Fever”; Sgt. Fraser Senior in “Due South”; and his GEMINI award winning performance as Duff in
Powerplay.
Clearly, Gordon Pinsent successfully balances acting and writing. His novels, “The
Rowdyman” and “John and the Missus” were both turned into feature films, Gordon
directing the latter. “The Rowdyman” was made into a musical and presented at the
Charlottetown Festival in 1976. He has co-starred with his wife, Charmion King, in two
of his plays – “Easy Down Easy” and “Brass Rubbings”, and in “Love Letters”. Gordon
wrote and starred in the CBC Movie of the Week, “Win Again”, in which he won a
GEMINI for his writing. His memoirs, “By the Way”, were published in 1994.
Born in Newfoundland, Gordon began his career at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, which
led to roles at the Stratford Festival. This was followed by Prospero in the The Tempest
at the Vancouver Playhouse, and the leading role of Cyrano at the Stevenville Festival.
He returned to the Stratford Festival to star in Trumpets and Drums. In the U.S.A.,
Gordon starred as The President of the United States in the cult movie: Colossus the
Forbin Project, and appeared in such TV series and movies as It Takes A Thief, Silence
of the North, Young Prosecutors, Banacek, and the feature film, The Thomas Crown
Affair, among others.
Gordon Pinsent has received two ACTRA Awards for his television work; three GENIE
Awards for achievements in Canadian film; five GEMINI Awards, a DORA Award for
the stage, as well as honourary doctorates at Queens, P.E.I. University and Memorial
University, Newfoundland. He was made Officer of the Order of Canada in 1979, and
promoted to Companion within the Order in 1998.
Gordon Pinsent also played the long running character of Hap Shaughnessey in the Red
Green Show, now in its tenth season, a supporting lead in the feature film, The Shipping
News and most recently, Fallen Angel for CBS and Saint Ralph for Alliance Atlantis.
Most recently, Gordon embarked on one of his most memorable projects to date. He
wrote, directed and acted in the MOW Heyday, (a period piece set during the end of
World War II), in co-ordination with Triptych Media Inc./Pope Productions which aired
in 2006.

The Yorkton Short Film & Video Festival, now entering its 60th year, is the longest
running festival of its kind in Canada. Over the years, the festival has garnered an
esteemed reputation as one of the country’s top film and video festivals; a reputation that
attracts outstanding entries and personalities from across Canada.
Established in 1947 as the Yorkton Film Council, the first festival was held in 1950,
making it Canada’s first Short Film & Video Festival. The very first Golden Sheaf Award
was introduced in 1958 and was presented to the most outstanding film entry in the festival. The Yorkton Short Film & Video Festival has undergone many changes since
the first festival and is about to celebrate its 60th year of great shorts. It currently presents
Golden Sheaf Awards in 17 genre categories, 10 craft awards categories, Cash and
Specialty awards. The Festival is held every spring and includes:
• The Golden Sheaf Awards
• Screenings
• Mini-Cinema
• Workshops
• Social Activities
About the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan
Once considered a rare disorder, Alzheimer’s disease has a great impact on our society,
our health care system and most significantly, on those individuals who have Alzheimer’s
disease and their families. It is estimated that one in four people have a family member
with Alzheimer’s disease, and one in two people know someone with the disease. There
are 18,000 persons in Saskatchewan who have Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder.
The need for education, support and awareness activities provided by the Alzheimer
Society of Saskatchewan continues to climb as the baby-boom generation enters the age
of highest risk. The number of persons with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia is
expected to triple in the next 30 years. The Alzheimer Society requires generous support
from our communities to meet the ever-increasing demand for services. It is estimated
that Canadians spend $ 5.5 billion a year on Alzheimer’s disease related costs.
There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease and no treatment that will stop its
progression. It is a progressive, degenerative disease. Several changes occur in the brains
of people with Alzheimer’s disease. It eventually affects all aspects of a person’s life:
how he or she thinks, feels and acts. Most people who develop Alzheimer’s disease are
more than 65 years-of-age. The older one becomes, the higher the risk. People with a
parent, brother or sister with Alzheimer’s disease also have a greater chance of
developing the disease.
The Alzheimer Society is funded through the generosity of individuals, business
organizations and charitable groups. The Society depends on special events and
community partners to ensure they can provide help to people who have Alzheimer’s
disease, their families and their caregivers. Funding provides hope for tomorrow by
allowing research for a cause, a cure and better treatments for the disease.
