WITASWAN Features Australian Film “Look Both Ways” in 2006 Program

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) March 13, 2006

Australian director Sarah Watt will show her new film “Look Both Ways” at the 2006 WITASWAN program on Saturday, March 18 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Landmark Century Centre Cinema (2828 North Clark Street in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood).

Sarah Watt is an award-winning filmmaker who has been working as a writer, director and producer of animation for 15 years. Her acclaimed animation “Small Treasures” (1995;15mins) brought widespread international attention, winning amongst its many honors the “Baby Lion” for Best Short Film at the Venice Film Festival. That year “Local Dive” and “Living with Happiness” followed, both of which screened widely at festivals and theatrically, winning many Australian and international awards.

Sarah’s hand-painted animated films are distinguished by her comic exploration of personal status set against Australian landscapes. “Look Both Ways” is her debut feature. Unlike her short films, “Look Both Ways” is live-action, interspersed with animated sequences. Set over a long, hot weekend, the film presents seven people who are trying to deal with unexpected events. As their paths intersect, they create an intriguing picture which is both intimate and universal.

“I set out to make a romantic comedy,” said Watt, “but the stuff of most people’s lives includes what we think of as tragedies, so ‘Look Both Ways’ ended up a bit of both, I guess… I tried to keep everything as ‘real’ as I could, to allow people to receive the film as a part of their own experience, to bring their own lives to it and enjoy it that way.”

“Look Both Ways” has already received praise from the Australian Film Institute, including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Support Actor awards, in addition to the Discovery Award from the Toronto International Film Festival jury. It was also named the 2005 “Film of the Year” by the Australian Catholic Film Office.

“Look Both Ways” was shown in Chicago last October as a part of the 41st annual Chicago International Film Festival. Kino International, the film’s US distributor, will be opening the film theatrically in Los Angeles and New York in April, with additional engagements planned around the United States this spring.

The 2006 WITASWAN program was organized by the members of AAUW-Illinois (the American Association of University Women) and IWPA (the Illinois Woman’s Press Association), with the proud support of the Australian Consulate-General Chicago.

This is the second WITASWAN program, timed for Women’s History Month. The first program was held on March 19, 2005 at the Chicago Cultural Center. The acronym WITASWAN stands for “Women in the Audience Supporting Women Artists Now.”

WITASWAN is an Illinois-based initiative dedicated to building international support for women filmmakers. WITASWAN members believe that “Look Both Ways” is an excellent choice for Women’s History Month, because it captures the vision and voice of an important new female filmmaker. The Australian Consulate-General in Chicago is supporting this event by arranging for Sarah Watt to speak to the group, introducing each film and then taking questions from the audience at the end. She will talk about women in the film industry in general as well as specific topics germane to her craft.

Call for Entries: Second Annual Summer Shorts 2006 Film and Video Competition Open to All Film and Video Makers

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 28, 2006

StudentFilmmakers.com (http://www.studentfilmmakers.com) announces its 2nd Annual Summer Shorts 2006 contest, which is open to all film and video makers around the world. The short film and video competition welcomes all genres and multiple submissions.

The purpose of the short film contest is to provide filmmakers the opportunity to gain more visibility in the industry and gain future opportunities for career advancement, as eligible works will be showcased online, viewed by industry professionals and shown at future film screenings and tradeshows.

“The contest is free to enter. We have wonderful prizes. The winners will be featured in our magazine, which is distributed to studios, cinematographers, and professionals working in the industry,” says Kim E. Welch, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of StudentFilmmakers magazine. “Directors and producers visit our website and our booth at tradeshows looking for new talent. This is an opportunity to connect with them and show your work.”

The rules allow for films to be within 5 minutes and 85 megabytes in digital movie file size, and submitted via URL, FTP, CD, or miniDV tape. Additionally, only QuickTime movie file format is accepted. Summer Shorts 2006 participants must visit the contest’s website for additional rules and guidelines to enter, http://www.studentfilmmakers.com/summershorts, and films must be submitted by September 30, 2006, 5:00 PM EST.

The finalist will be announced at the StudentFilmmakers.com website on October 15, 2006. The winners will be announced on November 20, 2006.

The Summer Shorts 2006 contest is organized by StudentFilmmakers.com and sponsored by Princeton Server Group, FujiFilm, The New School, Lowel, JVC, Abel Cine Tech, Sony, and Final Draft.

All eligible films will be showcased at StudentFilmmakers.com, and viewers can review and rate films online. Finalists and winners will be selected by the StudentFilmmakers committee and a panel of film industry experts. The top ten eligible films will advance to the final judging. The final winners will be determined based on entertainment value, creativity and production value.

Engineering Firm Post-Produces A Digital Short Film That Will Be Screened At 2006 Cannes Film Festival

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) May 21, 2006

Durrenberger Engineering, Inc. used its proprietary Digital Video To Film transfer process to create the 35mm print of the short film entitled “Atenea Y Afrodita” that will be shown at “Tous Les Cinemas du Monde” program of the world-famous festival, on May 24 at 1pm.

The 2006 “Tous Les Cinema du Monde” program features the work of over 80 international producers. This is the first year that an entry from Venezuela was selected to be shown.

The short film “Atenea Y Afrodita”, that was produced by Harold Lopez Garroz in Venezuela, was filmed using digital video camera technology and editted using non-linear computer editing technology. The producer and team mastered a digital video (DV) tape, then sent the master to Durrenberger Engineering, Inc. who performed the transfer of the DV tape from the video domain to a 35mm motion picture print. This print, known as the Release Print, is capable of being projected in virtually any motion picture theater worldwide.

Durrenberger Engineering, Inc. completed the transfer at its San Diego facility and using various service firms in Burbank CA. The transfer process is as follows. Durrenberger Engineering, Inc. post-produces a 35mm negative of the short film videotape at its San Diego facility. Then the negative is sent to a motion picture film development lab in Burbank, where the film is developed, then to a sound stage facility where sound is synchorized to picture, and finally, back to the development lab which makes the final 35mm print.

Durrenberger Engineering, Inc has been producing DV To Film Transfers for over five years. The firm has transferred several feature films which have been distributed in Europe, USA and Mexico, as well as many short films that have been screened in festivals such as Ottawa International Animation Festival, etc. In addition, the firm has produced movie trailers for films such as “Word Wars” (Seventh Arts Releasing), “Stuey” (Starring Michael Imperioli) and “Unspeakable” (Starring Dennis Hopper).
