Two Greats

Circa 1984. 13. Summer. Toronto, Canada. Had the opportunity to work on a feature film for television with Frances Foster (left) and Gloria Foster (no relation), two great actresses.
Some of you may remember Gloria Foster as "The Oracle" in the first two "The Matrix" films. Unfortunately she passed away before she could reprise her role in the final film.
Frances Foster was in movies such as Crooklyn and Malcolm X among a ton of others.
Sometimes I’ll flip through and see them in movies made long ago. I miss them both.

Moving to Ipernity

Hi,
I would like to let you know, that due to the censorship debate, which emerged in the aftermath of the introduction of content filters, I will become less active here on flickr and ultimately let my pro account lapse as a statement of protest against these latest measures. To be more accurate, this is rather meant to target Yahoo! than flickr, although the latter haven’t exactly earned credits in handling this incident.
Nonetheless, I will keep my account open for the time of the transition and I hope that many of you, whom I have met and begun to value as real friends, will visit me at my new home. But honestly, at this moment much of the initial enthusiasm over meeting people and making friends through photography has suffered substantially… It is not as much due to Yahoo! doing a lame job in responding to local laws or flickr receding to their position of "We aren’t allowed to say more", it’s also due to a notable general increase in attempts of large corporations and also governments to exert more control over their "netizens"/web users. Google isn’t much better than Yahoo! and iPernity will have to prove itsself. I’m trying not to get paranoid, but their are attempts under way in my country to pass a law that will enable authorities to force providers to disclose their users’ personal account data on request. What ultimately comes of that can be seen in the Shi Tao case, who is now rotting away for 10 years in a Chinese prison.
Like I said: I’m trying my best not to become paranoid, but it appears as if forces bigger than the communities that formed and form on the web, are in the process of gaining as much data and control as possible. While this doesn’t come as a surprise, it feels like "losing innocence" and hence losing a lot of the fun.
OK, I’m done with my little political speech – hope to see you over there and thanks for being friends with me, for your support so far, your encouragement and for – being you…

‘The Big Dig’ is the story of Regina’s Wascana
Lake Deepening project which took place in
the dead of winter from December ‘03-March
‘04. A mass of labor, heavy equipment, and
mass excavators stormed into Regina and
captured the city’s imagination. In every kind
of weather, day or night, people could be
found, lining the shores of Wascana Lake,
watching the equipment work. The job was
virtually a deep pit mining operation in the
middle of a city.

An elegy for Kodak (and film in general)

Two strange things happened simultaneously today:
1) I read that Kodak had filed for chapter 11, and
2) my oldest son asked what this roll of film was.
When trying to explain to him how the film was used, and how the cameras worked, the film was processed etc., I realised he didn’t have the vocabulary to understand what I was saying.
So it dawned on me that the day Kodak died, was the day I realised my sons would probably never understand what this is and most likely never ever find this a relevant technology to use for anything.

Dr. Norman Bethune’s innovative use of
medicine saved thousands of lives -

soldiers in the Spanish Civil War and Chinese

unsolvable problems for him.
