Alzheimer’s Disease: A 21st Century Epidemic Alliance for Aging Research Releases New Pocket Films to Raise Awareness

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 29, 2011

Experts warn that Alzheimer’s disease will reach epidemic proportions by mid-century. Already, more than five million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s. If a cure is not found, this number is expected to double in the next 20 years. In addition to the devastating effect on individuals and their families, Alzheimer’s disease will create a massive and unsustainable burden on the U.S. economy. A new series of five short animated “pocket” films, A Quick Look at Alzheimer’s, aims to raise public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, a critical step towards finding a cure.

The films, developed by the Alliance for Aging Research through a grant from the MetLife Foundation, were written and directed by David Shenk, author of the acclaimed book, The Forgetting, and are narrated by Emmy- and Tony-award winning actor David Hyde Pierce. Originally developed in English, the films are now also available in multiple languages including: Arabic, Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Available in multiple languages and playable in a variety of formats, including iPods, cell phones, PDAs, laptops and DVD players, these pocket films are universally accessible. Now, your questions about Alzheimer’s disease can be answered virtually anywhere–at home, at the office or even in the waiting room at your doctor’s office. Log onto http://www.aboutalz.org to watch or download the films.

“The looming threat of Alzheimer’s disease consuming the Baby Boomer generation urgently demands a national plan of action,” said Daniel Perry, executive director of the Alliance for Aging Research. “We encourage everyone to view and share these films so that there is broad understanding of what is at stake.”

Lemurian Films Releases Acclaimed Documentary “White Shadows” by Director Mialyn Hanna on DVD

Dalee Henderson

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 14, 2008

Lemurian Films today announced the release of the feature-length documentary “White Shadows” on DVD. Directed by Los Angeles filmmaker Mialyn Hanna, with music by Philip Glass, the critically acclaimed and award-winning film explores the life of celebrity hairstylist Dalee Henderson and his battle with HIV/AIDS. “White Shadows” has won awards at International Film festivals such as ARPA, Toronto’s Rebelfest, the San Diego Black Film Festival, Best of NewFest at Bam and Best Music of a Documentary at Park City International Film Music Festival.

“I felt compelled to capture Dalee Henderson’s spirit and positive outlook on film in the face of his many obstacles,” said Director Mialyn Hanna, Lemurian Films. “He truly served as an inspiration for many and I wanted to celebrate his life and the gifts he brought to so many people of all walks of Life.”

Growing up in extreme poverty and prejudice in the rural South, Dalee struggled as a gay African-American longing for success and a sense of belonging. Leveraging his iron will and determination, he moved to Los Angeles and achieved great success in the 1980s as a hairstylist working with luminaries such as Diana Ross, Denzel Washington and Stevie Wonder. He later is diagnosed as being HIV positive and must reconcile himself to the changes the disease wracks on his body and mind as well as the continued prejudice of his family and society. One of the most poignant decisions of Dalee’s life is when he agonizes over taking experimental treatments or simply continuing to fight through sheer strength of will and faith in spirit. Through it all, he maintains an unwavering sense of humor and joy for life.

“Dalee truly believed that every day was a gift,” said Director Mialyn Hanna, Lemurian Films. “This is a story about a man who transcends his disease and chooses to focus on his life.”
